The Australian Government is changing student income support - Youth Allowance, Austudy and ABSTUDY - to create a fairer system for students and to ensure increased support for those who need it most.

The first of the reforms are effective from 1 April 2010.

The reforms will increase access to, and better target, income support for students who need it most, through a fairer and more equitable allocation of existing resources.

Students from low socio economic backgrounds, rural and regional students and university students will particularly benefit from the changes.

The changes include increasing the parental and personal income thresholds, lowering the age of independence and introducing Student Start-up and Relocation Scholarships for university students receiving student income support.
