Labor candidate Maxine McKew has criticised Prime Minister John Howard, saying he has not provided any clarity on his future plans.

Ms McKew is running against the Prime Minister in the Sydney electorate of Bennelong.

Mr Howard announced today that if he wins the federal election, he will serve a full term in the seat.

"I won't be inflicting a by-election on the people of my electorate," he said.

But Ms McKew has accused Mr Howard of only "having a plan for himself".

"I guess I'm a bit puzzled," she said.

"This is, what is it, the third, fourth different twist on Mr Howard's plans for the future. It's puzzling and it's bewildering.

"I'm out in the community every day and what people are saying to me is that they want certainty and they want clarity. And the Prime Minister is simply not providing that."
