Mexico upped its swine flu death toll to 56 on Monday, but kept primary schools in six states closed due to further flu fears at the end of a shutdown of more than a week.

Mexico was progressively seeing a drop in recorded A(H1N1) cases after a peak on April 26, Health Minister Jose Angel Cordova insisted Monday, although infections had now appeared in 29 of the country's 32 states.

Since the flu scare broke out in Mexico late last month, thousands of infections have been reported worldwide.

"We have 2,059 contagions ... including 56 deaths, which is equivalent to 2.7 percent of all cases," Cordova told a news conference.

The last two recorded deaths were on May 6.
